How Coverage Typically Works

Two different things, two different rules.

Most patients are surprised by how differently insurance treats diagnostic testing vs. hearing aids. Here’s the short version.

Diagnostic Testing

Hearing evaluations are typically covered by medical insurance, especially when there’s a documented medical reason for the test. Coverage usually applies after your deductible, with a copay or coinsurance.

Most major commercial plans, Medicare, and Medicaid cover diagnostic hearing testing in some form.

Hearing Aids

Hearing aid coverage varies far more widely. Some plans offer a hearing aid benefit, a set dollar amount, or access through a third-party network. Many plans don’t cover hearing aids at all.

Original Medicare doesn’t cover hearing aids, but many Medicare Advantage plans do. Each plan is different.

Insurance FAQ

Quick questions about coverage.

Do you accept my insurance?
We accept all major insurances. The honest answer about coverage requires a quick benefits verification, which we’ll do for you at no charge. Call (614) 263-5151 with your insurance card and we’ll handle the rest.
Does Medicare cover hearing aids?
Original Medicare does not cover hearing aids. Many Medicare Advantage plans do, and the benefit varies considerably between plans. Some offer a set dollar amount; others use a third-party hearing aid network. We’ll verify your specific plan before your visit.
Will I owe anything at the appointment?
We’ll let you know your expected cost-share before your visit so there are no surprises. If your plan has a copay or coinsurance, that’s typically collected at the appointment.
Can I use an HSA or FSA for hearing care?
Yes. Hearing aids, diagnostic testing, and most audiology services are typically eligible expenses under HSA and FSA plans. Check with your plan administrator if you have questions.
